<A Wake-up Call from 2050>, a collection of research results in 13 fields jointly planned by NAFI and JoongAng Ilbo
The National Assembly Futures Institute, as its first research initiative since its inception, identified 13 core fields that will shape the future and attempted to predict the future of Korea. With key future drivers selected for each field, the future in 2050 was predicted, and based on the forecasts, comprehensive scenarios and policy tasks for each field were derived.
As a result of this study, it was predicted that most of the 13 fields will be faced with or experience quite a dismal future. It was determined that Korean society needs to implement changes in order to avert a bleak future and realize a desirable future. Therefore, in order to effectively inform the National Assembly, government and society of these study results, NAFI jointly planned this series "A Wake-up Call from s050" jointly with JoongAng Ilbo to sound the alarm on preparation for the future.
There were also concerns that delivering gloomy messages or prognoses through a daily newspaper might cause unnecessary social unrest. However, it was judged that the role of a responsible future research institute is to share this dark outlook for the future as it is and present discernible desirable future scenarios along with measures to realize such a future. This year, NAFI is planning to derive future scenarios for 2050 across the 13 fields and identify the future desired by Korean society through a public opinion survey.
I would like to express my special thanks to the external research teams in each field who participated in this study and JoongAng Ilbo (person in charge: Choi Jun-ho, Head of Science & Future Team) who was generous in his support for the three months during this series. Finally, I would like to make it clear that the articles presented in this series are mostly based on NAFI's research results, but also partially include the newspaper's viewpoints.
