Opening ceremony for the “National Assembly Futures Institute”,

a valuable institute for national future research

The National Assembly will officially open the National Assembly Futures Institute (NAFI) to be established  to predict, analyze changes in the future environment and to derive mid and long term national development strategies on May 28.

The NAFI is a National Assembly-financed future study organization that was established according to the terms of the National Assembly Futures Institute Act, passed by parliament in November last year. The NAFI aims to contribute to national development by not only strengthening policy capabilities at the level of the National Assembly but also overcoming the limitations of the current national future research system. Although the institute is financed by the National Assembly, it will be a politically neutral, independent and autonomous entity. Its neutrality will be carefully preserved by allowing all parliamentary groups the right to nominate directors, who will decide on NAFI research topics and project plans.

Amid rapidly changing circumstances both at home and abroad, the Republic of Korea has recognized that it needs to take proactive measures and form strategies to deal with important challenges. These include the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the low birthrate and the country’s aging population. Against this backdrop, the National Assembly has moved to provide foresight for the long term, and devise nationwide strategies.

The NAFI’s major research areas are expected to include unification• diplomacy• defense and international strategies, country’s new growth engines, sustainable development, and improvement of quality of people’s lives etc. The institute’s president and research staff will carry out projects using a network-type system –forming task forces with outside experts from various fields such as government and private sectors. Park Jin, professor at the School of Public Policy and Management at the Korea Development Institute (KDI) was appointed as the first president of the NAFI.

An opening ceremony for the NAFI will be held in the main auditorium of the Members’ Office Building at 11:00 am on May 28. The floor leaders of the parliamentary groups and a number of National Assembly members will be in attendance, while Speaker Jung Se-Kyun will make a congratulatory speech. <End>
