- NAFI launches its research projects,

and issues a public project challenge for deriving future scenario and political task -

Ever since its opening on May 28, the National Assembly Futures Institute, (President Park Jin) has been sincerely working on the selection of research projects and finally completed it. For official announcement, the NAFI will hold a briefing on launching the research project. In order to overcome the structural limitations of existing future research, the NAFI plans to focus on the future research through convergence research rather than a specialized area, and aims to serve as a hub for opening a new horizon for future research through comprehensive future prediction, national preference survey and discovering strategies with joint researches and active participation of external experts.

The research projects to be carried out in 2018, 「Research on Future Impact of Environmental Variables and Scenario Derivation」, 「 Research on the National Preferred Future」 and 「Research on Future Decision Policy」are base research task that build the basis for future research processes such as prediction, selection, strategies etc. for presenting the direction of national reform. And「The Future Research of North Korea and the Unified Korean Peninsula」 is an independent research project that draws the 「Future of the Korean peninsula 」 by applying the process of base research. The 2018 research projects were reported to the general meeting of the House Steering Committee after a resolution by the board of directors on August 18. The main contents of each research project are as follows.

First, based on big data analysis and macro trend prediction etc., the「Research on Future Impact of Environmental Variables and Scenario Derivation」will identify environmental variables, major drivers, unexpected variables that affect the future of the South Korea, and derive long term future prediction based driver-combined and core scenarios for 2050. Based on this, the 「Research on the National Preferred Future」 will ask the public's opinion on pessimistic future scenario and conduct a research on future policies that require the public choice. In addition, a comprehensive future scenario for 2050 will be derived to study the future preference value and preferred future by the public. In 「Research on Future Decision Policy」will identify the gap between the future that is highly feasible and the future that the people prefer, draw strategies to overcome this, and present 10 major reform tasks to strengthen future-oriented national innovation capacity based on the future that the people prefer. Lastly, 「Research on the Future of North Korea and the Unified Korean peninsula」 is a field study that predicts the future of the Korean Peninsula based on base research focused on the previous three tasks, and provides various future scenarios and comprehensive scenarios and policy tasks for the Unified Korean peninsula that the people prefer.

In connection with this, joint research will be promoted through closer sharing of contents with external expert groups in each field for efficient and professional future research. The NAFI finalized 11 major areas of future shaping (climate change, science and technology innovation (IT· BT· space), energy· resource, food· water resource, international politics, North Korea, economy, settlement conditions, human, population· society, politics ·administration) and entered the commissioned research competition process.
This is the first step for the NAFI to become a leading institution for future research in Korea as a hub for future research.

Based on the above research, the NAFI plans to publish a “Report on the Korea's National Strategy for 2050” in the future.
