2nd National Assembly Futures Forum Successfully Held by the National Assembly Futures Institute (NAFI)

Establishing Future Direction of School Education and Lifelong Learning



Kim Hyeon-kon, President of the National Assembly Futures Institute (NAFI) announced that the 2nd National Assembly Futures Forum was successfully held on August 31.

Attendees of this academic event included Kim Shin-il, a professor emeritus at Seoul National University (former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education); Kim Jin-gyeong, Chairperson of the Presidential National Education Conference; Jeong Il-hwan, President of the Korean Educational Research Association (KERA); Ryu Bang-ran, President of the Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI); Kang Dae-jung, President of the National Institute for Lifelong Education (NILE); Ryu Jang-su, President of the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (KRIVET); Park Hye-ja, President of the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS); and Song Hae-deok, Dean of Global Human Resources Development Graduate School, Chung-Ang University.

Prof. Kim Shin-il gave a presentation where he displayed analysis outcomes for current social situations, diagnosis of obstacles faced by our school education, and suggestions for future challenges and alternatives towards the era of lifelong learning.

It was followed by a discussion with Kim Jin-gyeong as a moderator. Jeong Il-hwan emphasized that a national education strategy is urgently needed, and also pointed out that future education policies should be established to shift from the existing paradigm that school education was designed for the purpose of nurturing manpower and social integration in the industrial society. Ryu Bang-ran focused on the need for customized or personalized education in order for public education to fulfill its responsibilities, with the benefits of a customized curriculum and a future-oriented education system.

Proposal made by Kang Dae-jung was that “whole-life study system” which is support system that guarantees people’s participation in learning throughout their lifetime with social management of the results. Ryu Jang-Su had a review on the changes in the labor market structure in the era of Industry 4.0 and also presented strategies and tasks for nurturing talents suitable for future society.

Park Hye-ja predicted and analyzed the future education according to digital innovation with a direction suggested for AI-based tutoring. Song Hae-deok introduced major educational reform cases abroad and identified tasks that need to be urgently addressed for school education and lifelong learning to prepare for human life expectancy increasing up to 100 years.

“Education is one of the most important national agendas requiring a long-term consideration; that’s why we have discussed future prospects and measures for school education and lifelong learning at this form,” said the NAFI President Kim. “Not limited to arranging a forum for discussion, NAFI will keep on striving to make the topics raised and discussed today public with follow-up research and to reflect them in actual policies.”

Written and online greetings were given from Park Byeong-seok, Speaker of the National Assembly; Choi Gang-wook, co-representative of the National Assembly Education and Culture Forum; and Yu Eun-hye, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education.
