‘Future Strategy Conference’ co-held by the NAFI- Ministry of Economy and Finance was successfully completed

- Korea, Gathering Hope for New Future -


The National Assembly Futures Institute (President Park Jin) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance (Minister Hong Nam-Ki) held a future strategy conference under the theme of “Korea, Gathering Hope for New Future” at The Shilla Seoul on September 20 (Fri.), 2019. The Future Strategy Conference consisted of 4 sessions; ▲ Trend of Global and Domestic Discussion on Future· Strategy ▲ Crisis and Challenge in Future Korean Society: Is the Future of Korea Dark? ▲ The Hope of Korean Society: Is it possible to create a new hope for Korea? ▲ Comprehensive Discussion: Future Vision of the Republic of  Korea and Future· Strategy Discussion Direction. In addition, an Emeritus Professor of Sogang University Choi Jin-Seok delivered keynote speech and the representative of Barunson  R.P.O. Ko Kyung-Kon delivered a luncheon speech.  

 In his opening remark, the president of the NAFI Park Jin, said, “From a strategic point of view to find out where the Korea is going, future forecasting research is impossible without a network with researchers. Furthermore, public sympathy is important in vision research and cooperation between the administrative and legislative is important in deriving national strategies”. He also added, “We want to contribute to the revitalization of future strategy research by drawing public consensus through the future strategy conference.”

At the welcoming remark that followed, Deputy Prime Minister and the Ministry of Economy and Finance Hong Nam-Ki emphasized, “ It is important to establish the right future strategy amid rapidly global and domestic environments and uncertainties." In addition, he said, “We need to develop six core strengths in order to thoroughly examine future challenges and proactively prepare for future changes.” He suggested “economic growth, an inclusive country, fostering innovative talents, realizing social values, resolving low birth rates, and accumulating social trust and others” as the core goals of the future strategy.

In his congratulatory remark, chairman of the Strategy and Finance Committee at the National Assembly Lee Chun-Seok said that weak states could win in no-win situation with good strategy while powerful states could lose if they have no good strategy, and emphasized, citing the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Gwando War-Battle of Guandu, and emphasized the need for national future strategy. He said, “This event is very significant and meaningful as this is the first time in the history of the Republic of Korea that the administrative and legislative put heads together to discuss the future.” He also added, "Let's build a country where we want to have children, a country without worrying about the old age, a country where work-life balance is guaranteed, and thus a country where everyone is happy."

A keynote speech on “The Theory of Global Strategic Nation” was delivered by the Emeritus Professor of Sogang University Choi Jin-Seok, followed by the first session under the theme of “Trend of Global and Domestic Discussion on Future· Strategy.” The first session was chaired by the Vice Chairman of the National Economic Advisory Council Lee Je-Min, and discussions were held by Professor Kim Dong-Hwan (Chung-Ang University), Senior Researcher Song Young-Jo (National Information Society Agency), Director Kim Won-Dae (Korea Asset Management Corporation) after presentations the topic by research fellows of the Science & Technology Policy Institute Park Byung-Won and Hong Sung-Ju.

In the luncheon speech, the representative of Barunson  R.P.O. Ko Kyung-Kon emphasized the necessity of creating an environment for technological innovation under the theme of "Virtual Reality: Technological Advancement and Its Impact on Our Life." The second session, organized under the theme of “Crisis and Challenge in Future Korean Society: Is the Future of Korea Dark?”, was hosted by Emeritus Professor of Yonsei University Lee Young-Seon. In this session, a senior research fellow at the Korea Development Institute Lee Jae-Jun, and a research fellow at the NAFI Kim Yoo-Bin presented a topic on the future of Korea in 2050, looking at the Korean economy from an economic perspective and into 13 areas respectively. In addition, Prof. Gu In-Hoe (Seoul National University), Prof. Kwon Ki-Seok (Hanbat National University), and Senior Research Fellow Huh Jae-Hun (Korea Labor Institute) participated as panelists.

The third session was chaired by a president of University of Science and Technology Moon Gil-Ju under the theme of "The Hope of Korean Society: Is It Possible to Create a New Hope for Korea?” . In this session, Professor of KAIST Seo Yong-Seok, a representative of Ars Praxia Kim Do-Hoon, and  the Head of the Institute for Industrial Policy Studies at Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade Kim In-Cheol gave a presentation on  generation revolution and human resource potential, innovation ecosystem and human competence, science technology and industrial competitiveness, respectively. Also a representative Lee Jeong-Hyeop (ID&P), senior research fellow Choi Yoon-Hee (KIET) and research fellow Lee Ho-Young (KISDI) engaged in discussion.

In the fourth session, a comprehensive discussion was hosted by at Mid and Long term Strategy Committee at the Ministry of Economy and Finance Choi Jae-Cheon under the theme of the “Future Vision of Korea : Vision • Strategy Discussion Direction”. Seven presenters from the first to third sessions, deputy minister of Ministry of Economy and Finance Bang Gi-Seon, director of Global Economy Division at the Korea Development Institute Woo Cheon-Sik, and senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy engaged in a comprehensive discussion on future vision and strategies.

This Future Strategy Conference, held under the theme of “Korea, Gathering Hope for New Future,” has significance in that the executive and the legislature jointly gathered experts from various fields for the first time to discuss the necessity and direction of the national future strategy. The NAFI and the Ministry of Economy and Finance hope that the Future Strategy Conference can serve as a foundation for Korea to gather hope and move forward into a new future. < End>
